Song of the day for October 20, 2023
2 min readToday’s song of the day is Edge Of Seventeen by Stevie Nicks. This version I am sharing is the performance at the 2019 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, an honour she deserves for sure. The amazing thing about this performance was her illness she was battling. She was hospitalized for double pneumonia. She said in an interview “The night of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, I knew before I went on stage that something was wrong with me, so I had to really pull it together,” Nicks explained. “The next day, I got really sick, and I ended up going into the hospital in Philadelphia for a week in ICU with double pneumonia and human metapneumovirus and asthma. Talk about your oxygen levels going down; my oxygen levels were hardly existing.” Despite being plagued by illnesses, Nicks called the induction an “incredibly memorable night.”
“Edge of Seventeen (Just Like the White Winged Dove)” is Track 6 on the Bella Donna album, which is her debut album. It was the album’s third single. The album which was released on July 27, 1981, the album reached number one on the US Billboard 200 in September of that year. Coupled with a live version of the song, “Edge of Seventeen” reached No. 11 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart. The album spawned four hit singles during 1981 and 1982: the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers-penned duet “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” (#3), the Don Henley duet “Leather and Lace” (#6), along with “Edge of Seventeen” (#11) and the country-tinged “After the Glitter Fades” (#32).
What a performer. I don’t think anyone would have faulted her if she had to cancel this performance, because of her illness at the time.
