Could an online sports radio network work?
I just came across a website looking to do crowdfunding for an online BC sports radio network. Basically a way to get a site up so people can listen to live sports talk after Rogers suddenly shut down the last sports station in Vancouver as well as Calgary. The website for BC Sports Network is up and available here
Now let’s look at big picture because I am ambitious. Could a 24/7 national network work? Since 2021 there have been many sports stations shut down. Between Bell and Rogers all sports stations they operated outside Ontario and Quebec were shut down. Currently only Edmonton, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal have sports stations. Bell operates TSN radio in Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal. Rogers has Sportsnet The Fan 590 in Toronto and Stingray operates the Edmonton sports station. Many hosts have been shown the door from these stations that have shut down.
A new platform could operate with hosts from all across the country broadcasting from a home studio. Certain times of the day hosts could focus on local to whatever market they are in but on a national show. So for instance a show from Calgary could focus on Calgary sports but also talk national sports. The station could operate online and through an app while also streaming on YouTube.
How would it be funded is a question that we would have to figure out. I would assume it would be a combination of advertising during each show as well as advertising and sponsorships on the website and app. Possibly even sponsorship on the video feed.
I would be interested in working with radio people to help make this a reality. Please contact me if anyone is interested in helping this thought become a reality. Because if there is one thing I know is Canadians love sports and we love talking about it.
