Where does Rogers go from here?
Today Rogers shut down 6 stations, surrendering the licenses back to the CRTC. They also laid off over 200 staff in various roles, including approximately 80 from the 6 shuttered stations, and another unspecified number of on air staff at stations across the country.
So what does Rogers do now? Well it seems to me that they cannot hire any new staff, so stations that lost on air staff will have to replace them or run with no shows in those time slots. From what I assume, programming will be shared. For instance in Medicine Hat the Jack morning show is gone, so it is probably safe to say that the morning show of Marc Michaels at Jack Calgary will fill in and most likely become the permanent show in Medicine Hat.
Griff and Caroline in Halifax are gone. They will most likely be replaced by afternoon host Nicole, and then afternoons will be replaced by someone from out of market. Currently the programming lineup for Jack London still has Paul Harper on mornings but also has Cosmo from CHEZ Ottawa in the afternoons.
I have a strong feeling we will see a lot more hosts on a lot more stations across the Rogers network. Maybe even going as far as having a regional or national show at certain times of the day.
Sadly I predict this is the new future of radio. After today it feels like the future has come now and radio will not revert back to the good old days unless new owners take over stations and actually invest in the stations.

AM radio waves are a danger to the powers that want to control us.
Every AM outlet will be gone within a couple of years at this rate.
You must know what happened to Lloydminster.
CBC, CTV gone without any warning.
They’re not being replaced once they’re gone.
FM transmission is easier to control until there is no free radio transmission at all.
Look into the WEF.
There is a concerted effort to get the AM band a thing of the past.
As a young kid in the 60’s and 70’s, it was remarkable what am stations i could get on a little transistor radio.
I spend decades in radio and the passion I had for this medium, seems to be seriously fading.
So few are aware of what’s happening right in front of them, until it’s too late.
Try and get those closed-down am licenses up and running. Won’t happen. Will not be allowed (for whatever reason).
No offer of sales on any of these closures. Just shuttered.
All corporate reasoning doesn’t fly, in the face of business people who have worked and supported this industry.
It can work, but the money-holders tell us it can’t and they need to go.
This is about more than jobs lost.
It’s the signal that matters.

I think you are close with your thoughts, but are wrong about the agenda.

I’m not looking for an argument or anything, just for people like you who have a forum to opine, and do the right thing by looking a little deeper than what the corporate world tells you.

Sometimes, the hour seems late.
Radio is such an important communication connection-tool, and I fear for its demise.
Again, an FM signal can be contained/controlled.
AM?
Not so much.
Awareness and action (informing).
Do research.
Prove things for yourself.
There’s too much info out there for the mind to find.

The least they could’ve done is flip CJNI 95.7 FM in Halifax to a Top 40 format as Kiss Radio to better compete with Bell Media’s 101.3 Virgin Radio.
They would have needed to go to the CRTC for approval. By them shutting it down, it means that now a company has to go to the CRTC to apply to run a station at 95.7 which can take a year or more for an approval and then it would mean probably another year or more before its on the air. So it means less competition in the market for roughly 2 years. Doing that means less advertising revenue going to someone else. When Bell sold off 45 stations it was a seamless transition between old and new ownership and the new owners literally had built in ad revenue and on air staff immediately. Rogers probably didn’t want that, and I am sure they realized getting CRTC approval to go from a spoken station to music would have been time consuming and a challenge.

Looks like Rogers is hiring new staff after all.. Here in Edmonton they’re looking for street teamers to join the team.
