Goodbye Sportsnet 650 and 960
Last night I got a message from someone I know, telling me to watch out for sweeping changes within Sportsnet radio. I saw the message this morning when I woke up and immediately thought of Toronto as there had been a lot of rumors of the future of SN 590. Especially after Rogers now owns 100% of MLSE (ownership of the Toronto Raptors, Maple Leafs, Marlies and more). My assumption was the changes would be related to more shows dedicated to the teams they own.
However, this morning I find out that Halford and Brough were not on air this morning on SN 650. I heard that it was programming from Westwood Sports and then some repeat of a previous Halford and Brough show. So I tuned in and was listening to Westwood sports. Currently I am listening and there is nothing. Just dead air. No talking, music, ads. I am trying it from 3 sources. As I write this it is currently 1pm Toronto time, 10am Vancouver time, and there had been reports circulating that a meeting was happening at 10am to discuss the future of the station. Sadly it sounds as though another Sports radio station has been silenced in Vancouver. Meaning that for the first time since 2001 there are zero sports stations in Vancouver.
I will keep this post updated as I learn more.
Update #1 All staff at 650 and 960 have been let go. Both stations are shut down. If I get more information I will keep updating
