Corus announces CKNW will move to 730

The long rumored move to 730 is official. In an announcement today CKNW will move from 980 to 730. The move becomes official as of February 24, but the 730 signal has been broadcasting 980 since Corus pulled the plug on the All Traffic station that used to live on 730 in June.

Similarly in Edmonton CHED moved from their long time home of 630 to 880 in October. This move in Vancouver has been rumored since June and it makes sense as the 980 signal has a lot of issues in the downtown area and other pockets of the greater Vancouver area.

Going forward the lineup on CKNW will remain the same. There are no plans to change the lineup at this time but there are rumors of a national evening show launching later this spring. We will see what happens with that though as Corus had a national show that was on late night and it was cancelled.

  1. 730 CKNW is so staticy most of the day and night. I will not be listening any more. I am in South Surrey. I will be sticking with CBC.

  2. Haven’t listened to CKNW since they ceased to be a New Westminster station. When they had a traffic station on 730, I would sometimes listen even though it was annoying and repetitive to avoid the traffic jams. CKWX is now a very bad Calgary news station and 650 is only if you like sports. CBC is too far left for my liking so I never listen to them. The rest are in foreign languages with one religious station. Where does that leave me? I listen to American stations, a bunch of Seattle stations come in pretty good in the day, lots to choose from, at night I can pick up a number of oldies rock and country stations and various talk stations. Now that CKNW is going dark, I’ll be able to listen to KOMO better. It’s too bad the Canadian government doesn’t care about AM radio, we could have at least an oldies station to listen to and maybe some decent talk radio, not what is being offered.

  3. Since changing stations to 730 from 980 I have had a whistling sound on my car radio, no other station has that noise! Have tried to eliminate the sound, by adjusting speakers, volume etc. It’s still there!! I do not get this whistling noise on any other AM or FM station. I live in the Steveston area of Richmond, however I hear it while driving into the city or Fraser Valley.
