Radio NL lays off some of the newsroom

Update: Radio NL laid off the majority of its newsroom on Tuesday, with four of seven positions axed.

News director Paul James confirmed to Castanet Kamloops that NL morning co-host Bill Cowan, reporters Brett Mineer and Victor Kaiser and assistant program director Sean Pooley have all been laid off.

The Stingray-owned company will keep James, morning co-host Jeff Andreas and longtime Kamloops Blazers play-by-play man Jon Keen, as well as the station’s part-time staffers.

James said the decision came down from Stingray’s head office in Montreal and he was informed on Monday.

“I don’t know the rationale [of each layoff] but I’m heartbroken to lose them,” he said.

“They were all wonderful employees and great human beings. It’s just one of these things where decisions have to be made due to costs and restructuring and a refocus toward a different strategy to continue on with the NL brand.”

At 11am local time the talk ended and they started playing classic rock.

This is a developing story. More to come

Going forward according to the website, the station is running a mostly music format, with Mornings with Vinnie and Randi, middays with Stacey Thompson, afternoon show with Drew Ferreira, and evenings with Phylis OG. Weekends will see Lea Miller and Phylis OG.

Basically this is an AM version of Boom now.
