Song of the day for January 12, 2024

"The Joker" by the Steve Miller Band, released in 1973, became their first Billboard Hot 100 No.1 hit. It also topped charts in the UK, Ireland, New Zealand, and the Netherlands. A 2005 cover by Fatboy Slim and Bootsy Collins reached the UK and Ireland charts.

Today’s song is a classic song from the Steve Miller Band. The Joker was the bands first No.1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 on this date in 1974.

Released as a single in October 1973, the song topped the US Billboard Hot 100 in early 1974 and reached the top 20 in Australia, Canada, and the Netherlands. More than 16 years later, in September 1990, “The Joker” reached number one on the UK Singles Chart for two weeks after being used in “Great Deal”, a Hugh Johnson-directed television advertisement for Levi’s, thus holding the record for the longest gap between transatlantic chart-toppers. This reissue of “The Joker” also topped the Irish Singles Chart, the New Zealand Singles Chart, the Dutch Nationale Top 100, and the Dutch Top 40.

February 28, 2005 Fatboy Slim released a cover of this song with Bootsy Collins. That version reached number 32 on the UK Singles Chart and number 29 in Ireland.
