Song of the day for January 5 2024

This post discusses Prince's remarkable cover of Radiohead's "Creep," performed at Coachella in 2008. The late artist's first public show in 1979 is also highlighted, emphasizing his extraordinary talent as a live performer. The anecdote concludes with a personal reflection on Prince's captivating stage presence and a link to the performance.

This song is a really good cover of the Radiohead classic, Creep. This version is by the late great Prince. He performed this 8 plus minute version at Coachella in 2008. This cover was so good Radiohead had fought hard to keep this version on Youtube because of how good this is.

I wanted to make sure I posted a live song today because it was on this day in 1979 20-year-old Prince played his first public show at Minneapolis’ Capri Theater, for what was sure to have been a lucky audience. While the artist had already signed a three-album deal with Warner Bros. Records and released his debut, 1978’s For You, he still had yet to take to the stage. Ahead of the concert, Prince assembled a band featuring bassist André Cymone, guitarist Dez Dickerson, drummer Bobby Z, and keyboardists Gayle Chapman and Doctor Fink – several of whom would be part of The Revolution. Although Prince would soon be known for his live performances, Warner Bros. executives who attended the hometown show weren’t convinced and felt that the young artist needed continued development.

Anyone that saw Prince live would have been treated to a hell of a great performance. I was lucky enough to see Prince in Toronto in May of 2015 and it was one of my favourite concerts ever. He was a gifted and born showman. I just wish he played this cover at his show that I was at.
