July 2023 updates from NWBroadcasters

7/31/23 – Salt Spring Island’s new not-for-profit community station CHIR-FM 107.9 (and rebroadcaster CHIR-1 102.1) are aiming to be on the air by February 2024. The 107.9 facility (850 watts) will be the same wooden pole & antenna on Mt. Erskine that was used by the previous CFSI-FM, which operated from 2009-15 until it was ordered off the air by the CRTC for continual non-compliance issues.  Canadian Radio News
7/29/23 – Warren Dean, who was laid off from his weather anchor job at CTV Vancouver Island in June, has found a new position in Victoria. He joins the Government of B.C. Ministry of Municipal Affairs. Dean had been a weather anchor in Victoria since January 2021.   X Tweet/ Video 
7/28/23 – After five years, morning show host Tim Hunter is retiring from KRKO AM 1380 Everett on August 4. He’s held a number of positions in the Seattle market since 1975. Veteran broadcaster Bryon Mengle takes over mornings on Monday, August 7.  Radio Online
  
7/28/23 – Kim Robinson is moving on from Shaw TV’s community access channel in Victoria, where she’s primarily been a producer for the last 15 years. Prior to joining Shaw, she was a sales assistant with Corus Vancouver.
7/27/23 – Seattle radio veteran Marty Reimer returns to the airwaves Saturdays from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. effective July 29 on KPNW-FM 98.9. He has 30 years in the business with 15 of them as an on air personality at The Mountain KMTT-FM 103.7 from 1997-2012.  All Access Music Group     
7/27/23 – Cassidy Mosconi joins Global BC as a reporter. The Curtin University in Perth, Australia Journalism & Public Relations BA has been working at Seven Network in Perth since 2019.      
7/26/23 – Vancouver newspaper The Georgia Straight has removed its “most unlikeable” categories in its 27th annual “Best of Vancouver” awards. The move comes after pushback by Global BC news anchor Chris Gailus and Global’s The Morning Show B.C. producer Fiona Forbes.  Daily Hive

7/26/23 – What’s being claimed as a pro football first, the CFL BC Lions vs Edmonton Elks game this weekend will be broadcast in Punjabi.  Sher-E-Punjab Radio CKSP AM 600 will carry the game in the Vancouver area, with kickoff set for Saturday at 4 p.m. PT at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton. Experienced Hockey Night in Canada: Punjabi Edition broadcasters Harpreet Pandher and Taqdeer Thindal will call the game.  Rob Williams, Daily Hive
7/26/23 – Veteran Vancouver radio/TV broadcaster and game show host Wayne Cox, who currently operates The Word website, takes a behind-the-scenes look at his days at the BCTV/ Global News Hour.  The Word, Vol. 30
  
7/25/23 – Charis Hogg, who was laid off as co-host of the morning show at The Peak CKPK 102.7 HD2 Vancouver in January, has landed a new position with CBC Radio Vancouver. She is filling in producing for the Early Edition and On the Coast.  Twitter Posting 
7/21/23 – Monday to Friday 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Nielsen average quarter-hour persons 25-54 leaped 74% from April, vaulting KISW-FM 99.9 Seattle from fourth-ranked to first. Brand Manager/ midday host Brian Castle is testing the power of KISW’s personalities by adding a Mens Room Replayweeknights at 10 p.m.  InsideRadio 
7/20/23 – Producer Theresa Lalonde has retired from CBC Vancouver after 13 years. She has produced shows for CBC Radio, television and CBC Gem, including Sounds Like Canada, Our Vancouver, and Planet Wonder.   
7/20/23 – Amber Schinkel has announced her departure from CTV Vancouver Island to “move on to something new”. She had held reporter, anchor and producer positions since 2017.  Twitter Posting
7/20/23 – Former Seattle sports PD Brian Long has been named Director of Programming for the Bonneville Phoenix cluster. He was PD at KIRO AM 710 Seattle from 2010-14.  Radio Insight
7/20/23 – KEXP-FM 90.3 Seattle has announced a series of upcoming changes to its radio programming lineup, including the addition of three new weekly specialty shows, and a new host for Early. The new radio lineup will premiere on Wednesday, September 13th.  KEXP Release
7/19/23 – Veteran Vancouver broadcaster Stirling Faux, who announced he is leaving his position as host of Weekend Mornings at CKNW AM 980, will be the new afternoon drive host on WAVE CIWV-FM 98.3. He is scheduled to start at WAVE on July 26.  
7/18/23 – Former Vancouver broadcast executive Brad Phillips is retiring from his current position as Corus Audio Senior Vice President. He held leadership positions with several Vancouver radio and TV stations beginning in 1987 before joining Corus Radio in 2012. 7/18/23 – Root Sports Seattle Mariners TV analyst Mike Blowers, who has been out much of the season with health issues and an injury from a fall, returned to the booth last night for the Mariners vs. Minnesota game.  TV Maven, Twitter
7/18/23 – Veteran Vancouver broadcaster Stirling Faux is leaving his position as host of Weekend Mornings at CKNW AM 980 to step into a new opportunity. His last day on air at CKNW will be this Sunday, July 23rd. Faux has hosted a number of shows at CKNW going back to 1993 and has worked in radio for over 50 years.
7/18/23 – Former Vancouver radio executive Jeff Woods has been hired by The Rock CKGE-FM 94.9Toronto to host a new show, Classic Rock Sundays with Jeff Woods, premiering July 23rd. Woods was PD/ Music Director at CFMI-FM/ CFOX-FM Vancouver from 2003-05 and has created and hosted several syndicated programs which have aired on CFMI.  All Access Music Group  
7/17/23 – FTVLive reports FOX 13 KCPQ-TV Seattle morning anchor Liz Dueweke, who announced her departure Friday, has been hired by KFOX-TV El Paso as the main evening anchor. She had been with FOX 13 since 2014.   Scott Jones, FTVLive
7/17/23 – Global BC Community Relations Coordinator Johnny Mah has been promoted to Marketing & Community Supervisor. The 2007 BCIT Radio Broadcasting, Communications graduate will lead all community efforts for Global BC and support marketing campaigns. 
7/16/23 – Seattle Sports KIRO AM 710 Marinersplay-by-play announcer Rick Rizzs will miss the next few games. The longtime voice of the team was in an ATV accident this week, but did not suffer any serious injuries. Rizzs is expected to return to the announce booth soon.  Brent Stecker, Seattle Sports
7/15/23 – Dave Tomlinson is leaving his position as the Seattle Kraken radio analyst at Sports Radio KJR-FM 93.3. He leaves after two years for a new broadcasting opportunity with the NHL in Canada. 7/15/23 – Liz Dueweke, FOX13 KCPQ-TV Seattle morning news anchor and host of “Good Day Seattle”, has announced her departure after 9+ years. She was a morning news anchor and midday reporter for KOMO 4 for a year prior to joining FOX13. Dueweke is headed out of state to start a new adventure.  KCPQ Goodbye Video
7/14/23 – Kulshan Community Media has filed a Minor Modification to a Construction Permit to move its KMRE-FM 88.3 transmitter to King Mountain, north of Bellingham. ERP will be 120 watts using the KBAI AM 930 tower.  Allocation Study  FCC Proposal
7/14/23 – CTV Vancouver anchor/ reporter Alissa Thibault returned to screens last night anchoring the 11:30 p.m. news. She has been off air since April 6, suffering burnout and early onset PTSD.  Twitter Posting  Daily Hive Backgrounder

7/13/23 – Former FOX 13 KCPQ-TV Seattle reporter/ photo journalist Steve Kiggins, who announced last December that his contract was not being renewed by the station, has accepted a role to cover news on Northwest Now. The program runs from mid-September to mid-May on KBTC-TV, where Higgins joined as a reporter back in January.  Twitter Announcement  
7/12/23 – Country The Wolf KKWF-FM 100.7 howls up into first place in the Nielsen Seattle-Tacoma June 2023 PPM 6+ ratings with a 7.4 share. Classic Rock KZOK-FM 102.5 is second with 6.5. Classic Hits The Jet KJEB-FM 95.7 slips to third with a 6.0 share.  Radio Online
7/12/23 – FOX13 KCPQ-TV/ FOX13+ KZJO-TV Seattle Senior VP and GM Sheila Oliver takes over the helm of WFLD-TVWPWR-TV Chicago. She’s been with FOX TV since 2002, with the last two years in Seattle.  TVNewsCheck
 
7/11/23 – Retired long-time CKNW AM 980Vancouver talk show host Jon McComb has announced he is joining former Vancouver Sunreporter Sam Cooper on production of The Bureau Podcast. Episode 1 runs tomorrow morning at www.thebureau.news and www.jonmccomb.com  Jon McComb, LinkedIn
7/10/23 – Former Seattle radio news veteran Rich Johnson has left his position as Director of News Content at USA Radio News. The Las Vegas-based broadcaster was a reporter for KIRO Radio Seattle from 2003-05.  All Access Music Group 
7/09/23 – Truth Quest Radio has applied to the FCC for a downgrade to its current construction permit for KTQR-FM 88.7 Forks. The original CP proposed installation on a tower that is now being dismantled and no longer available for use. ERP will decrease from 900 to 270 watts at a different site which will continue to serve the community of Forks.  Engineering Report  FCC Data

7/07/23 – Former Seattle radio producer Tanner Chambers has joined Country K99 KUAD-FM 99.1Windsor/ Fort Collins CO as morning host. The Seattle native previously served as a producer and writer for the syndicated The Hit List with Fitz and producer for Fitz in the Morning at The Wolf KKWF-FM 100.7 Seattle. He was most recently morning host at Froggy 92.9 KFGY-FM Healdsburg/ Santa Rosa CA.  Radio Insight
7/07/23 – Former CTV Vancouver News Director Les Staff recently took to a health and wellness podcast to talk about how he hit rock bottom after losing his job in January 2021. He joined CTV in 2007 and was ND starting in December 2012. Staff is currently a self-employed licensed insurance specialist with Corry Staff Financial Group in Coquitlam.  Amir Ali, Daily Hive
7/05/23 – Emmy award winning FOX 13 KCPQ-TVSeattle news anchor/ reporter Jamie Tompkins, who left in May to join the Seattle Police Department as head of communications, has been given a chief of staff position. It’s part of a change in command staff in the Department. Tompkins had been with FOX 13 since January 2014 following two years at KOMO 4. She was the second anchor/ reporter hired by Seattle Police, after Amy Clancyof KIRO 7 was hired in strategic communications.  Isolde Raftery, KUOW News 
7/05/23 – Former Vancouver DJ Peter Starr died from cancer at the home of a friend in Colorado on July 3 at age 80. He was a Boss Jock at CKLG from 1966-68 and then CFUN from 1968-70 before moving to Los Angeles as a writer/ producer/ director of Peter Starr Entertainment. David Swarts, Roadracing World Publishing
7/04/23 – CHEK-TV Victoria has hired reporter/ videographer Jordan Cunningham and digital editor Adam Chan, both of whom were among recent layoffs at CTV Vancouver Island, and has promoted reporter April Lawrence to Executive Producer. Former Global BC anchor Paul Haysomwill anchor CHEK News at 6 for the first time tonight. 7/04/23 – Veteran writer and producer Norman Klenman died June 8 at age 99. The UBC Journalism graduate served during World War II with the RCAF before joining the Vancouver Sun as a sportswriter. During his career he wrote and produced several independent and CBC feature films. In 1975 he and Daryl Duke founded CKVU-TV (now identifying as Citytv) in Vancouver.  Sun/ Province Obituary 
7/01/23 – Veteran Vancouver weather guru Russ Lacate has reappeared on TV screens as he hosted the weather segment on CBC-TV News at 6 on Friday. He was the CKWX Vancouver meteorologist from 1999-2020 and Citytv Vancouver from 2011 until he was laid off in cutbacks in November 2020.  Twitter Posting  CBC News Video 14:36
