On this day in 1964, a cover of Richard Berry’s “Louie Louie” by The Kingsmen was under FBI investigation for obscenity, despite the recording’s unintelligible lyrics. The investigation lasted 31 months, and the FBI concluded that they were “unable to interpret any of the wording in the record.” The song’s publishers, meanwhile, offered $1,000 to anyone that could definitively distinguish the “vulgar” language.
