Rawlco announces they are buying one and selling one station

Two deals were announced this week. Stingray is buying C97.7 FM Calgary from Rawlco, which means Rawlco will have zero stations left in Alberta.

Rawlco has also agreed to purchase 92.9 The Bull Saskatoon from Saskatoon Media Group. 92.9 The Bull, which currently carries a Country format, would join Rawlco’s three other stations in the Saskatoon market – C95 FM , which airs Hot AC; Active Rocker ROCK 102 FM and news/talk/sports station 650 CKOM, in addition to Regina signals Z99 FM, which also carries Hot AC; JACK 94.5 FM, which airs a mix of Classic Rock and Classic Hits; and CKOM sister station, 980 CJME.

If approved, the transaction will leave Saskatoon Media Group with just two stations, 98COOL (CJMK-FM) which airs a Classic Hits format, and Country 600 CJWW. Saskatoon Media Group is owned by Golden West Broadcasting CEO Elmer Hildebrand, but its holdings are separately maintained.

The deal for C97.7 is subject to CRTC approval which is expected in the second quarter of Stingray’s 2027 fiscal year. Purchase price was not disclosed.

I expect this to be the start of a lot of smaller sales as companies gear up to prepare themselves for a potential Corus sale, as well as the rumor of some other stations up for sale gains steam. There has been rumors of a lot of smaller market stations in BC and Alberta being sold, as well as whatever happens with Corus, whether one company buys all the radio stations or multiple companies buy the radio division. With Rawlco fully exiting Alberta they are most likely out on buying any Corus stations, but companies like Pattison and Stingray have been rumored to be interested in some of the Corus stations. I predict a lot of change in 2026 just like there was in 2025.
