On this date in 1964 Canadian rock musician Gord Downie the lead singer and lyricist for the Canadian rock band The Tragically Hip was born. As well as releasing eight solo albums he is revered by many as an inspiring and influential artist in Canada’s music history. Downie, along with his Tragically Hip bandmates, was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada on June 19, 2017, for “their contribution to Canadian music and for their support of various social and environmental causes”. He died of glioblastoma on 17 October 2017 aged 53.
