William (Bill) J. Hughes
July 17, 1925 – November 15, 2021
We have lost our representative of the Greatest Generation. Born into very modest circumstances, like many of his generation who grew up during the Depression and WWII, he was frugal and unpretentious. But he got to live his dream of being on the radio. From CJAT to CKWX and then to his cherished CKNW, he loved the call letters and was part of the golden age of radio. News reader, sales, general manager, part owner with Frank Griffiths (a special partnership), Western Broadcasting, the Canucks. But above all, for over 43 years, he was the interviewing host of a 15-minute program called The Roving Mike. During over 15,000 broadcasts he treated his listeners to friendly and light-hearted chats with people from around the world. He started each program with “Good morning, friends” because his listeners were his friends. His program was a small but important part of one of the most dynamic teams in broadcasting – a team that he was proud to be part of.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy, his three “boys” (Lindsay, Larry and Brian), many loving grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
He never stopped being interested in the world around him and its future. He was a gentleman, humble but generous, who set an example for us of how to lead a full and meaningful life. Forever in our memories.
No immediate plans for a ceremony but we hope to get together in the new year.
