8/31/22 - Vancouver alt-rock station The Peak CKPK-FM 102.7 HD2 has joined CBC Radio and other Canadian stations which have pulled Montreal indie group Arcade Fire music from their playlists. 8/28/22 - A celebration of life has been announced for former CBC Vancouver staffer Alan Walker, who passed away May 19 at age 83. He joined CBC in 1958 where he progressed to a coordinating producer. He left the Corporation in 1973, becoming a lawyer, specializing in wills and estate planning. 8/26/22 - Olympia was home to one of the first licensed commercial radio stations in the US. 8/26/22 - Longtime British Columbia newscaster David Biro died peacefully at home in Victoria on Tuesday, August 23rd at age 70 after a long bout with cancer. During his career he worked at radio stations in the Okanagan and Fraser Valley and at radio and TV stations in Vancouver and Victoria. Biro received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Radio-Television News Directors Association in 2011. The family will hold a private celebration of life.  Times Colonist Obituary

8/25/22 - Longtime Seattle sports broadcaster Mitch Levy, who lost his job at KJR in 2017 following his arrest in connection with a prostitution sting, is returning to the air. He will appear on the BJ and Migs morning show on KISW-FM 99.9 beginning Thursday Sept. 8 at 7:15, and then every morning following a Seahawks game. 8/23/22 - Friends and family are mourning long time Vancouver broadcaster Ian Power, who passed away this afternoon at Richmond General Hospital at age 63. He had been suffering from Glioblastoma, a particularly aggressive brain cancer, and complications were created when he suffered a fall last evening.

8/23/22 - Former CTV Vancouver news anchor Scott Roberts joins Global Edmonton to co-anchor its News Hour at 6. The award-winning investigative journalist will anchor with Carole Anne Devaney on the news desk starting September 1. Roberts was part of a layoff of Vancouver broadcasters by Bell Media in March. 8/19/22 - The BC Hockey League has renamed its Broadcaster of the Year award the Jim Hughson Award. The 65-year-old Hughson, who retired last September, worked Vancouver Canucks games on radio from 1990-98, on TV from 1999-2007 and was a play-by-play broadcaster for Hockey Night in Canada, where he worked from 2005-21. 8/18/22 - Former BCTV (now Global BC) producer/ director Allan Myers died suddenly in Toronto on August 10 at age 59. The BCIT graduate started his career at BCTV, moving to roles at Al Jazeera, WUSA-TV Washington DC, Temple Street Productions and TVO, among other freelance work. He also worked as a producer/ director for National Geographic Canada. Myers was most recently the Senior Director of CTV National News.  SNBC News

8/17/22 - Ian Speckman, a face and voice very familiar to TV and radio consumers, died August 3 in Kelowna. He was 60. Speckman was a celebrity businessman from Maple Ridge, who produced and starred in his own commercials for his car dealership. His ads played during such high-profile events as the Stanley Cup Playoffs and the World Series. 8/06/22 - Former CKNW AM 980 Vancouver sports personality Ron Barnet is making slow progress  at Cartier House in Coquitlam. His daughter advises that he is on a waiting list to get into a home in Chilliwack and despite his health issues is amazingly optimistic, is always happy and positive, and is in no pain. The 82 year old continues to recover from a hip replacement last December.

8/06/22 - Salem Media Group is selling two of its AM stations in Seattle. Catholic network operator Relevant Radio has purchased KLFE AM 1590 for $500,000. Baaz Broadcasting will acquire Regional Mexican La Patrona 1680 KNTS Seattle for $225,000. In the sale filings, Salem requests a waiver as KNTS is the expanded band replacement for KLFE. Rather than deactivate the operating expanded band station and turn in its license as the FCC rule would require, Inspiration seeks to sell that station to a minority-controlled buyer at a below market price.  RadioInsight

A news release suggests that moving it to HD2 will give The Peak more freedom with its playlist. 6/01/22 - After suffering a stroke in Toronto, former Vancouver broadcaster Roy Hennessy has taken a turn for the worse. He is entering palliative care/ hospice in the next day or so. It turns out that the stroke was bleeding in the brain, caused by a very fast spread of colon cancer, only diagnosed a month ago.  He is awake but not able to verbalize. Hennessy was President of CHHR-FM 104.1 (now CHLG-FM) when it swapped frequencies with KAFE-FM 104.3 Bellingham in January 2010, which reduced interference with KMCQ-FM 104.5 (now KLSW-FM) Covington.

5/10/22 - The Seattle Seahawks have announced a new multi-year partnership with KING 5 to become the team’s official local television partner starting with the 2022 season. KING was most recently the Seahawks’ television partner from 2004-11. 5/09/22 - Fred Cole, longtime chief engineer at Victoria radio stations CKDA and CFMS from 1967 to 1995, died earlier today in hospital after a several months-long illness. He was 87. Cole began his career in Toronto AM radio working for legendary broadcasters Jack Kent Cooke and Ted Rogers, before coming west to work for David Armstrong.

5/01/22 - A memorial for long-time CKNW Vancouver broadcaster Bill Hughes was held Saturday at the Vancouver Golf and Country Club in Coquitlam. Over 100 family and friends and former colleagues heard reminiscences from his sons, granddaughter, and long time 'NW investigative reporter George Garrett. More than a dozen former staffers attended to mark the passing of their former General Manager and host of the legendary Roving Mike broadcast, that ran for more than 15,000 shows. 3/25/22 - Retired CBC staffer Vera Moss passed away February 27 at Surrey Memorial Hospital following a short illness. She was with the Corporation in Vancouver from 1983 until early retirement in 2009, working as Assistant Director on numerous programs such as Reach for the Top, Pacific Report and Spilled Milk. There will be no service as per her wishes. A celebration of life may be held at a later date.

The multiple Hall of Fame inductee has worked at KONP as both Sports Editor and Sports Director. January 31 to February 4 has been declared “Scooter Chapman Week”. 1/30/22 - The KKDZ AM 1250 Seattle transmitter has been moved from Pigeon Point (West Seattle) to the former 1210 night site in Auburn. The FCC granted the move last June, with a change of COL to Kent. The station is operating with 5 kW non-directional daytime only at 47-18-01 122-11-19, with the directional night facility to be built later. Vancouver’s first lady of jazz lays claim to be the first Black performer in North America to host a TV show. The Eleanor Show in 1955 was produced in Vancouver and broadcast by the CBC Television Network. 1/17/22 - There was a partial failure of the transmission line going to KBCB-TV (24.1) and the KBTC-TV translator (28.1) Bellingham shared antenna on Orcas Island. Both stations were off air for several days, but a KBTC engineer reports that both stations returned to full service at 4:15 p.m. Sunday following repairs.

1/09/22 - Ruth Prins, aka Wunda Wunda, captivated the souls of regional preschoolers over the earliest two decades of Seattle television. Wunda Wunda premiered on November 9, 1953 and ran for nearly 20 years on KING-TV. Ron Barnet

1/03/22 - Former CKNW AM 980 Vancouver sports personality Ron Barnet had a successful hip replacement December 19 at Royal Columbian Hospital. He has now been moved to Eagle Ridge Hospital to start rehabilitation, where his daughters report that he is expected to spend a significant amount of time recovering and with regular physio will regain his mobility.

Ray "Chubby" Howard

1/03/22 (Updated) - Pedal steel guitarist & DJ Ray "Chubby" Howard passed away December 23 at age 95. He was a DJ in the early 1960s on KFHA AM 1480 Lakewood WA & also briefly hosted a western music show on KTVW-TV Tacoma. Howard was also a regular on Channel 13's Country Jubilee. Most recently he had been hosting a weekend vintage country music show on classic country trimulcast Real Roots Radio WBZI, WKFI & WEDI in Ohio. She stays in the North West, where she also steps into the Vice Chair role for the Puget Sound Chapter of ASIS International. Ryan was at KING from 2011-17 and more recently has guest hosted and contributed to New Day NWLinkedIn Announcement

1/02/22 - KOMO AM 1000/ FM 97.7 Seattle will change its call letters to KNWN. However, as of today at 2 p.m., the station is still identifying with its current calls. The call letter change is due to the change of ownership to Lotus Communications. The KOMO calls stay with KOMO-TV.
