9/28/20 - Patricia Davidson, widow of long-time CKNW Vancouver sports broadcaster Al Davidson, died September 18 in Port Moody at age 94. The two met when they were both working at CKCK Regina in the late 1940s. Al passed away in 1991. Funeral Mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. on September 30 at All Saints Parish in Coquitlam. 9/27/20 - In a deal backed by Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway, local TV station giant E.W. Scripps is buying independent broadcaster ION Media from the private equity firm Black Diamond Capital Management for $2.65 billion. The deal will give Scripps a national footprint, merging ION with its Katz networks and Newsy to create a new national TV business. 9/16/20 - Jacques Baillaut, former Manager of Communications for Radio-Canada French radio and TV in Vancouver died August 17 at age 96. He played a major role in the preparation of the inauguration in September 1976 of Radio-Canada’s French TV station CBUFT-TV Vancouver. 9/13/20 - Former Vancouver Province journalist and CBC-TV panelist Kay Alsop died September 6 in West Vancouver at age 100. She was a staff reporter for The Vancouver Province from 1968-79 and was seen on local screens as a frequent guest panelist on nationally televised CBC shows Front Page Challenge and Flashback. 9/12/20 - Former Vancouver radio personality Alex Carr has announced on his Facebook page that he will be hosting weekend evenings on Sonic 102.9 CHDI-FM Edmonton. He hosted middays at CFOX-FM 99.3 Vancouver from 2017-19 before moving to host mornings with his sister Ruby at The Edge CFNY-FM 102.1 Toronto. The pair were released in January after just one year.

9/02/20 - KING 5 Seattle re-aired the final episode of New Day Northwest hosted by Margaret Larson this morning. She retired from the program at the end of July after more than ten years hosting the show and over 35 years of work in television. A number of personalities are appearing on the show vying for a chance at taking over as the new host, which KING is expecting to announce by next month.

9/02/20 - The purchase price for KTDD-FM 104.9 Eatonville by Worship 24/7 is $320,000. The group's PR says KTDD reaches Olympia, which is outside the station's 60 dBu service contour, but there is good coverage into Tacoma's suburbs. Worship 24/7 paid $175,000 for KURT-FM 93.7 Prineville OR last year only to have the same broker sell a better local signal there to a competing group.

Worship 24/7

9/01/20 - 247 Media Ministries, the parent organization of the Worship 24/7 radio network, has reached an agreement to acquire KTDD-FM 104.9 Eatonville from iHeartMedia’s Ocean Station Trust. 8/29/20 - Victoria-based CBC Radio Documentary Producer Rick Gibbs passed away July 23 at age 70. He also was a writer (The Perfect Guitar), creator of the Island Jazz blog, and a supporter of the arts. 8/29/20 - Veteran Vancouver broadcaster Lyndon Grove died August 21 at age 88. He started in radio at CHAB Moose Jaw SK in 1949 before working at a number of Vancouver stations including CKNW, CKLG, CHAN-TV, CHQM, CFMI, and CKST, along with several print publications. 8/28/20 - The coroner's office has confirmed that Vancouver hockey writer and broadcaster Jason Botchford died from an accidental overdose of fentanyl and cocaine. 8/28/20 - The CRTC has approved an application by Rogers Media Inc. to change the authorized contours of CFUN-FM 104.7 Sechelt by relocating its transmitter to a nearby wireless telecommunication tower owned by Rogers and by increasing the effective height of the antenna above average terrain from -718 to -143.1 meters. 8/24/20 - Former Vancouver broadcaster Genevieve Westcott died from breast cancer in New Zealand July 10 at age 65. She was a reporter/ writer for both the Vancouver Sun and Province before moving into television at Canwest Television Network and then CBC Vancouver. She went on to become West Coast Bureau Chief for CTV National News and anchor and correspondent of CTV’s W5. 8/24/20 - Vancouver Police have arrested two men in connection with an assault on Sportsnet 650 CISL AM producer/ host Justin Morissette whose leg was broken as he was attempting to stop a group of evangelical anti-LGBTQ demonstrators preaching homophobic and racist messages. Brooke & Jeffrey will replace the previous morning show trio featuring David Cruise, Britt Jones and Katie Stanners, who had been together less than a year. The Peak CKPK-FM 102.7 Vancouver morning hosts Tyler Middleton and Chris Lynch got wind of the story and offered to make backup copies of the audio from the bear. 8/07/20 - Sitcom dad Alan Thicke is being recognized by the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame for a trio of popular theme songs he helped create. He will be celebrated as co-writer of the catchy opening numbers for prime time classics The Facts of Life, Diff'rent Strokes, and the game show Wheel of Fortune. 8/05/20 - Legendary Seattle DJ, concert promoter and Seafair race announcer Pat O’Day died Tuesday at his home in the San Juan Islands. He was 85. He was Seattle's highest-profile DJ of the 1960s and the area's dominant dance promoter. He joined the show two and a half years ago with founding host Justin Drex Wilcomes. Fill-in host Shane Hewitt offered a heartfelt tribute to Addison, noting that the show is "going nowhere". Both Addison and Hewitt stressed that the former's departure had nothing to do with recent Corus/ Global cutbacks. Addison is known for his encyclopedic sports knowledge, for which he was hired by NBC during the Vancouver Olympics.

Among the innumerable programs which benefited from his skill in matching actors and roles were The Beachcombers (1985-1989), Liar, Liar (1993), Northwood (1991-1994) and Little Criminals (1995). 6/11/20 - Sinclair Broadcast Group has now closed a $6.75 million deal to buy KOMO-FM 97.7 Oakville from South Sound Broadcasting. The deal also includes the Redmond-licensed K249DX at 97.7. Sinclair acquired the option to buy the station as part of its 2017 deal to buy Fisher Broadcasting’s radio-television operation. The signals have been operated under a local marketing agreement by Sinclair which relays KOMO AM 1000 for improved coverage in Tacoma and Olympia.  InsideRadio

6/09/20 - A number of Seattle stations have been running on a temporary antenna from West Tiger Mountain since the antenna fire in November 2018. The temporary antenna is now being replaced with a new permanent one. Some stations have lower power auxiliary facilities on Cougar Mountain, which they will be transmitting from until the antenna work is completed.

5/23/20 - Pioneer Vancouver broadcaster Ferdy Baglo died May 15 in Chilliwack at age 93. He began his career at CKMO (later CFUN) at age 16 before moving to the newly launched CKNW in 1944 to become its first music director. He joined the corporation in the 1950s as a Film Sound Technician and was with the production team for Vancouver programs Cariboo Country (1960), The Education of Phyllistine (1964), The Beachcombers (1972-1990), Canadian Gardener (1989) and Spilled Milk (1995). He was also with CBC Toronto during the early '90s before returning to Vancouver.

He worked in the music industry before going on to a career in broadcast sales at BCTV (now Global BC) where he was a salesman and sales manager, and also worked at CFUN Vancouver. Two weekday mid afternoon programs have been cancelled, Couture Mary hosted by Mary Lo 1-3  p.m. M-F,  and Anita's Talk Show hosted by Anita Lee, 3-4 p.m. M-F.  The 1-4 time slot is now fed from its Toronto station CHKT AM 1430. To keep them on the payroll, Lo gets a two-hour music show on CHKG-FM 96.1 Vancouver every Sunday and Lee gets a new one-hour talk show on AM 1470 every Saturday. 4/15/20 - Former Vancouver broadcaster and Liberal Member of Parliament Marke Raines died suddenly on Good Friday at his home in Toronto. He was 93. He worked at a number of Vancouver stations, beginning as a copywriter and announcer at CKMO in 1951. Raines was most prominent as a news reporter at CKNW, but also reported for CJOR and CHAN-TV. CKSP AM 600 Vancouver

2/21/20 - Installation is about to begin on the new CKSP AM 600 Vancouver transmitter site. There were a number of delays, including getting permits. CKSP is co-siting with CKNW AM 980 at that station's Cloverdale transmitter site. While this work is taking place, CKNW will at times be on reduced power. Engineers hope that AM 600 will be testing on reduced power early in April with full power sometime this summer.

Chang will now co-host the broadcast Monday to Thursday from Toronto with Adrienne Arsenault, while Hanomansing will host Friday and Sunday from Vancouver. Tommy Wolski

1/20/20 - Former Vancouver jockey, columnist and broadcaster Tommy Wolski died from a heart attack today in Naples, Florida. He is believed to have been in his late 70s. Wolski was a prominent rider at Hastings Park Racecourse in Vancouver during the 1970s and ’80s, later writing his Hoss Talk column in The Province from 1995 to 2015. He hosted Horse Talk on CJOR in the '70s, had a horse racing show on CKO-FM in the 1980s and hosted Sport of Kings on cable and CKVU-TV in the 1990s. Wolski was inducted into the B.C. KYMU has added Newsnet on 6.3 in SD 480i, Retro TV on 6.4 SD 480i, and Heartland on 6.5 SD 480i; KSTW adds Circle on 11.5 SD 480i; KONG adds This TV 16.3 SD 480i. 1/16/20 - Gordon Lyall died peacefully at home on December 26 at age 91. The Vancouver lawyer and entrepreneur was part of the group that started up CKVU-TV (now branded as Citytv) in 1976. 1/16/20 - Peter “Cam” Kjellbotn died in Edmonton December 30 at age 69. He started his television career at BCTV (now Global BC) Vancouver before moving to Edmonton in 1974 for the launch of ITV (now Global Edmonton).
