Seattle has filed a silent STA and went silent on December 28th. The
terrestrial signal has ceased but the station says it will continue to

12/31/20 - The FCC has granted the sale of Univision Communications to private investment firm Searchlight Capitol Partners.
The new owners say they plan to use Univision's extensive platform and
entertainment, sports and news content to “deepen its relationship with
the Hispanic community” while looking for new growth opportunities by

Sinclair Seattle Radio Group, along with sister stations, KOMO-TV and
Univision Seattle raised more than $104,000 and generated over 6,000

in his Seattle home. Curtis was hired as an on-air DJ at KJR in the
1960s by Pat O’Day, later working at several other stations, including

12/20/20 - BC Entertainment Hall of Famer Big Daddy Dave McCormick, who was familiar to listeners in Vancouver, Seattle and California, created and voiced the very popular Discumentary
series on CFMI-FM Vancouver from 1972-86. The Estate of Dave McCormick
has provided 100 one-hour episodes to Sunshine Coast Community Radio C-VUE
in Sechelt. The programs will stream at 6 p.m. Mondays, beginning
December 21, initially weekly, but more often if there is a big demand.
McCormick passed away March 29, 2017 at age 80.

12/19/20 - The seven major Seattle TV stations have begun broadcasting the NextGen TV ATSC 3.0-based digital transmission standard.
The Seattle-Tacoma market is the largest market to date to have all of
its stations broadcasting in NextGen TV. Viewers using an antenna may

a radio play written and directed by Seattle Radio Theatre founder
Feliks Banel, normally held at Town Hall Seattle was presented only on
air on KIRO Radio this year. The live performance aired Thursday,

12/19/20 - The Jet KJR-FM 95.7 Seattle, says its 18th annual Bender’s One Big Give,
a 13-hour radiothon from Seattle Children’s patients, families,
supporters and hospital staff, raised over $270,000 to benefit Seattle

12/19/20 - Bob Newman, who played Gertrude, Boris S. Wort, and more than a dozen other characters on the long-running J.P. Patches
show on KIRO-TV Seattle, passed away Sunday, December 13 in Shoreline
after a long illness. He was 88. The family said they plan to hold a
public remembrance for him sometime in 2021, once the pandemic has

12/18/20 - As Christmas approaches, former KING 5 Seattle reporter Michael James Konopasek
has a goodwill story to relate. He found an elderly woman in the snow,
who had lost her balance with her walker and couldn’t get up. With help
from another person, she was picked up and driven home. Konopasek was

Seattle-Tacoma market KZIZ AM 1560, licensed to Pacific, has filed to
modify its Construction Permit from the former KMIA AM 1210 night transmitter site
to the existing KMIA day/ night site where they propose to diplex the
existing two KMIA towers. They will be operating 3.2 kW non-directional
day and 200 watts directional at night with nulls to the

has been elected to fill a vacant council seat in that city. He has
been a C-FAX talk show host, a CTV legislative reporter, a CBC Radio
reporter/ host and a reporter for CHEK News. It was the third time lucky
for Andrew, who ran unsuccessfully for mayor in 2014 and narrowly

Canada’s first television station, CBUT channel 2 Vancouver, signed on
at 6 p.m. December 16, 1953 with a five-hour, all-film program of
Canadian shows. The microwave network allowing coast-to-coast broadcasts
wasn’t in place until 1958, so most of the early CBUT programming was
local, but some Toronto shows arrived as kinescopes. Viewers in the
right areas with antennas could receive four stations, CBUT Vancouver,

Vancouver broadcaster Dick Abbott died Dec. 2 following a hemorrhagic
stroke. He was 85. Abbott started working at CKNW in the music library
at age 16, then began his career as a recording engineer with the
station. He started recording jingles and commercials and became
Production Manager, considered by many in the recording industry to be
the best in his field in North America. Abbott retired from CKNW
in 1998. A funeral service for invited guests will be held at 2 p.m.

on her first official day of hosting. Larson retired at the end of July
after ten years hosting the show and Addrisi was named the new host

months.

Victoria is celebrating its 64th anniversary on-air with its first
podcast. CHEK began broadcasting at 5 p.m., Dec. 1, 1956 as the first
commercial TV station in BC. Now independent and employee-owned, CHEK has launched its debut podcast Our Native Land,
focused on Indigenous culture on Vancouver Island and beyond. It's

Victoria owner Mel Cooper is stepping aside, but not down, from his
position as chair of the Telus Victoria Community Board. The
88-year-old philanthropist has held the position for the last 14 years.
Cooper, who is the founding chair, says he wants to let some new blood

a not-for-profit organization providing complimentary transportation
for lower mainland residents battling cancer. Garrett was with CKNW for
over 40 years until his retirement in 1999.

meteorologist Russ Lacate, senior managing editor Bruce Claggett,
longtime afternoon news anchor Jim Bennie, weekend anchor/ producer Toby
Kerr and web editor/ reporter Mike Hall. As part of newsroom
restructuring, morning co-anchor John Ackermann will move to afternoons.

CBC Vancouver staffer Ron Harries passed away September 6 at Royal
Inland Hospital in Kamloops at age 82 following a heart attack. He
joined the staff of CBC Vancouver in the late 1950s, working in a

recently filed applications with the FCC to eliminate several of its
subsidiaries in a transfer that will streamline operations from eight
subsidiaries to two. In the Seattle market, the Commission has approved
the changes for KBKS-FM, KHHO AM, KJR AM/FM, KJAQ-FM KUBE-FM and
KZOK-FM, which will now have their licensees listed as iHM Licenses,

7/27/20 - Bob Addison announced on the CKNW AM 980 Vancouver overnight show The Shift that this was his last shift as producer. He joined the show two and a half years ago with founding host Justin Drex Wilcomes. Fill-in host Shane Hewitt
offered a heartfelt tribute to Addison, noting that the show is "going
nowhere". Both Addison and Hewitt stressed that the former's departure
had nothing to do with recent Corus/ Global cutbacks. Addison is known
for his encyclopedic sports knowledge, for which he was hired by NBC

has now closed a $6.75 million deal to buy KOMO-FM 97.7 Oakville from
South Sound Broadcasting. The deal also includes the Redmond-licensed

of its 2017 deal to buy Fisher Broadcasting’s radio-television
operation. The signals have been operated under a local marketing

Raines died suddenly on Good Friday at his home in Toronto. He was 93.
He worked at a number of Vancouver stations, beginning as a copywriter
and announcer at CKMO in 1951. Raines was most prominent as a news
reporter at CKNW, but also reported for CJOR and CHAN-TV. He served five
years as a Member of Parliament in the Trudeau government beginning in

heart attack today in Naples, Florida. He is believed to have been in
his late 70s. Wolski was a prominent rider at Hastings Park Racecourse
in Vancouver during the 1970s and ’80s, later writing his Hoss Talk column in The Province from 1995 to 2015. He hosted Horse Talk on CJOR in the '70s, had a horse racing show on CKO-FM in the 1980s and hosted Sport of Kings on
cable and CKVU-TV in the 1990s. Wolski was inducted into the B.C. Horse
