Robert Blackwood

4/28/20 - Former CBC executive Robert Blackwood died March 7 after a long illness. He was 75. He served as Director of English Radio for the Province of Québec and as Executive Producer of Radio Performance Programming in Vancouver. Memorial arrangements are being postponed until the fall.

4/28/20 - Long-time garden show hosted by Ciscoe Morris, weekends on KIRO-FM 97.3 Seattle, ended Saturday. Morris says on his website that he is not retiring, even though his radio show is ending, and is still active giving talks and appearing on TV. KIRO Farewell

Carol Thorbes from CBC Radio and TV also worked at several private radio stations on the island, the interior and Vancouver during her career.  I don’t know how to reach anyone from the privates but know that Carol’s profile is on The Vancouver Broadcasters website. 4/20/20 - Former Vancouver broadcaster Carol Thorbes died April 14th at age 63. She was an announcer at several stations on Vancouver Island, the BC Interior and Vancouver before moving to a reporter/ anchor position with CBC during most of the 1990s.  She then had an award winning career as an Simon Fraser University Media and Communications Officer. 4/18/20 (Updated) - Former Coast Radio GM and GSM Brian Langston died April 17 following diagnosis with ALS last fall and retirement from his position as GM of CJHR-FM 104.7 Woodstock, ON. 4/17/20 - TV and film cameraman Doug Franks died April 13th at Royal Columbian Hospital at age 79. He started his career at CBC Vancouver as a cameraman, later joining BCTV (now Global). 4/15/20 - Warm KRWM-FM 106.9 Seattle has partnered with local business Bartell Drugs for 31 years for the Teddy Bear Patrol program, and this year, since 3/1, have collected 36,072 teddy bears. 4/15/20 - Hubbard Seattle creates the “Fight Back, Give Back” program to help local charities raise awareness and funds during the COVID-19 crisis with a donation up to $500,000 worth of commercial airtime in April for messages from non-profit partners. Marke Raines

4/15/20 - Former Vancouver broadcaster and Liberal Member of Parliament Marke Raines died suddenly on Good Friday at his home in Toronto. He was 93. He worked at a number of Vancouver stations, beginning as a copywriter and announcer at CKMO in 1951. Raines was most prominent as a news reporter at CKNW, but also reported for CJOR and CHAN-TV. He served five years as a Member of Parliament in the Trudeau government beginning in 1974 but did not run for re-election. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Globe and Mail Obituary

4/14/20 - The News 1130 CKWX AM Vancouver overnight news anchor has been shuffled to other, mostly evening duties. As a result, the station started picking up the overnight all news network feed from Calgary as of last Tuesday branded as All News Radio. It will continue until the health emergency is over.

4/14/20 - News 1130 CKWX AM Vancouver staffers Peter Wagner and Marcus Fitzgerald have been moved from their regular duties to do hourly newscasts on COVID-19 on Rogers Radio's Abbotsford, Chilliwack and Squamish stations. The moves have necessitated extending some other air shifts to compensate.

4/09/20 - Former CFAX AM 1070 Victoria News Director Greg Bohnert died suddenly of a heart attack on March 27. He had a long career in radio news that spanned several provinces and decades. He was news director at CFAX in 2005-06 before moving to Calgary, where he more recently had been anchoring weekend news for CBC Radio from 2012-14 and working as a freelance communications consultant. 3/27/20 - The FCC has postponed indefinitely its upcoming Auction 106 for FM broadcast licenses. Among the proposed auction items is a Class A allocation assigned to Coupeville, WA. The frequency is for 101.1 MHz  on Whidbey Island and is coverage-restricted by a CRTC-FCC agreement to protect CFMI-FM Vancouver and a yet-to-be-assigned station near the River Jordan community on Vancouver Island.  FCC Release

Following the recent announcement of Simi Sara in mornings, The Mike Smyth Show will air from 9 a.m. to noon. Former CKNW weekend host and Global BC reporter Jill Bennett will host The Jill Bennett Show from noon to 3 p.m. each weekday. He had been named Officer of the Order of Canada, received the Alberta Order of Excellence and was a member of the Canadian Business Hall of Fame. 3/19/20 - The Najafi Companies and Trinity Broadcasting Network have entered the market of companies attempting to acquire KING-TV/ KONG-TV Seattle parent company Tegna Inc. The Najafi Companies is a private global investment firm based in Phoenix, while TBN is a faith-and-family broadcaster. 3/18/20 - Gray Television Inc. has withdrawn its offer to acquire Tegna Inc. because of concerns about the impact of the coronavirus outbreak on U.S. regional TV station operators. Private equity firm Apollo Global Management Inc. and media mogul Byron Allen remain in contention to buy the company and negotiations are continuing. 3/18/20 - CBC is temporarily eliminating most of its local TV newscasts and consolidating its resources to focus on coverage at CBC News Network amid the evolving COVID-19 crisis. Effective today, it won’t be airing local TV newscasts across the country except at CBC North. 3/16/20 - Vancouver market CKNW AM 980 has added more live weekend shows, including the preemption of some prerecorded programs, with more than 40 hours of COVID coverage over the weekend and news every 30 minutes. 3/13/20 - Kid Carson, who is returning to the morning show on Z95.3 CKZZ-FM Vancouver March 30th, has announced he will be joined by stand-up comedian and actor Jordan McCloskey. The new show will mark Carson’s return to the airwaves after he left KiSS Radio 104.9 in 2017.  Daily Hive News

3/12/20 - Comedian and TV producer Byron Allen has made a US $20-a-share, all-cash offer for Tegna. He plans to merge his existing businesses, which include 15 local TV stations and the Weather Channel cable network, into an entity called Allen Media. CKSP AM 600 Vancouver

2/21/20 - Installation is about to begin on the new CKSP AM 600 Vancouver transmitter site. There were a number of delays, including getting permits. CKSP is co-siting with CKNW AM 980 at that station's Cloverdale transmitter site. While this work is taking place, CKNW will at times be on reduced power. Engineers hope that AM 600 will be testing on reduced power early in April with full power sometime this summer.

Chang will now co-host the broadcast Monday to Thursday from Toronto with Adrienne Arsenault, while Hanomansing will host Friday and Sunday from Vancouver. Tommy Wolski

1/20/20 - Former Vancouver jockey, columnist and broadcaster Tommy Wolski died from a heart attack today in Naples, Florida. He is believed to have been in his late 70s. Wolski was a prominent rider at Hastings Park Racecourse in Vancouver during the 1970s and ’80s, later writing his Hoss Talk column in The Province from 1995 to 2015. He hosted Horse Talk on CJOR in the '70s, had a horse racing show on CKO-FM in the 1980s and hosted Sport of Kings on cable and CKVU-TV in the 1990s. Wolski was inducted into the B.C. KYMU has added Newsnet on 6.3 in SD 480i, Retro TV on 6.4 SD 480i, and Heartland on 6.5 SD 480i; KSTW adds Circle on 11.5 SD 480i; KONG adds This TV 16.3 SD 480i. 1/16/20 - Peter “Cam” Kjellbotn died in Edmonton December 30 at age 69. He started his television career at BCTV (now Global BC) Vancouver before moving to Edmonton in 1974 for the launch of ITV (now Global Edmonton).
