Leslie John Fuller
03/31/18 - Former CBC staffer (Leslie) John Fuller passed away March 9 in Vancouver at age 94.  He trained with the J. Arthur Rank organization in England for two years prior to moving to Vancouver and joining CBC in the 1950s, where he enjoyed a career of nearly 30 years as a film editor.  There will be no service by request.  Sun/Province Obituary   
Jordan Wilkerson
03/31/18 - Jordan Wilkerson joins KING 5 and KONG-TV Seattle as the newest member of the KING 5 News weather team.  She anchors weather on KING 5 newscasts on weekends at 5:00 p.m., 6:30 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. as well as the 10:00 p.m. newscast on sister station KONG.  Wilkerson joins the station from WCSC-TV Charleston, SC where she anchored both weather & traffic and was part of the team covering Hurricane Matthew in 2016 and 2015’s “Thousand Year Flood.”  She got her start at KEPR-TV in Tri-Cities, WA as a feature reporter and weather anchor.

03/31/18 - Tarrah Harvey has accepted a part-time traffic reporter position at News 1130 CKWX AM Vancouver.  She begins training this weekend, and will have her first solo shift on April 8th.  The 2016 BCIT Broadcast and Journalism graduate has served internships at several prominent stations in BC and is also a competitive figure skating coach for VIDA, Vancouver Ice Dance Academy at Burnaby 8 Rinks.

03/30/18 - Former CTV Vancouver meteorologist/weather anchor Duane English has announced on his Twitter page that he is leaving his current weather anchor position at Global Okanagan Kelowna on April 2.  He worked at CTV from 2011-13 before moving to the Okanagan.  His wife Wesla Wong, who was a weather anchor at Global BC, announced her departure from Global Okanagan last month.

03/30/18 - Veteran Vancouver home improvement broadcaster Shell Busey recently returned to local airwaves.  His home improvement shows were popular for over 25 years on several radio and TV stations beginning in the 1980s.  He can be heard from 8 to 9 a.m. Saturday mornings on Roundhouse Radio CIRH-FM 98.3 and Pulse CISF-FM 107.7 Surrey.  Ask Shell info

03/29/18 - Conservative commentator Ben Shapiro is making his return to Seattle radio with a new syndicated show.  He left KTTH AM 770 in 2015 after his daughter underwent open heart surgery.  The show will air from 6 to 7 p.m. starting Monday.  Shapiro is also expected to start making more frequent appearances on both The Jason Rantz Show and The Todd Herman Show on KTTH.  KTTH release  All Access Music Group

03/27/18 - CKNW AM 980 Vancouver has apparently laid off three reporters, Jeremy Lye, Jon Hall and Tim Dickert.  All three have been with 'NW since 2015.  Reports indicate there are more Corus Radio layoffs in other cities.  It was confirmed last week that the station's news department will be moving in to the Global BC Burnaby studios in the next few months.  Patrick Johnston, Vancouver Sun

03/26/18 - After some early setbacks, Roundhouse Radio CIRH-FM 98.3 Vancouver CEO and Director of Programming Don Shafer believes he has a sustainable model, attractive to advertisers.  But after two years in operation and with a potential audience of between 700,000 and 1 million listeners, the station is languishing at the bottom of the PPM Radio Ratings.  Roundhouse’s content is 80-percent talk and 20-percent music, with a strong commitment to offer airtime to non-profits, advocacy organizations and other socially conscious groups.  BCBusiness

03/23/18 - Longtime Vancouver TV, and more recently radio broadcaster, Steve Darling has announced on his Twitter page that he is leaving his anchor position at Sportsnet 650 CISL AM after seven months.  He was with Global BC (CHAN-TV) for 18 years before taking an unsuccessful shot at provincial politics, and ultimately landing at Sportsnet 650 last August.  He says he has accepted another offer and will reveal more details next month.  Twitter Announcement  Scott Brown, Vancouver Sun 
03/22/18 - Our contact at CKNW AM 980 Vancouver has confirmed that the station's news department will be moving in to the Global BC Burnaby studios in the next few months.  The exact date is yet to be confirmed.
03/22/18 - Broadcast Dialogue reports Ronnie Stanton, former Vancouver radio PD and VP of National Brands and Programming for Corus Entertainment, is returning to his native Australia in May.  He will end his programming duties for the Apha Media San Jose stations, but continue to oversee the company's Rock and AC formats.  Stanton was PD at CKZZ-FM from 2008-13 and Senior Brand Director at CFMI-FM/CFOX-FM Vancouver from 2013-16.

03/19/18 - Former Vancouver and Kelowna broadcaster/talk show host/politician Barrie Clark died Friday at age 85 after a short battle with cancer.  At his request there will be no service.  Clark's career dates back to CKOV Kelowna in 1949, hosting shows at a number of Vancouver radio and TV stations during the 1950s and '60s, before moving into politics.  He held elected positions in North Vancouver and provincially during the 1960s and '70s before going back into radio in Vancouver and Kelowna and holding office on Kelowna City Council from 1999-2008.  Jim Bennie, News 1130

03/16/18 - Heather Backman joins The Q! CKKQ-FM 100.3 Victoria as its new afternoon co-host with Ryan Awram.  She was most recently a part time traffic reporter in Los Angeles and was previously morning show co-host at CHOM-FM 97.7 Montreal for five years before a Bell Media layoff in early 2017. 
03/15/18 - iHeartMedia has reached an agreement In principle with stakeholders to restructure debt.  To implement the balance sheet restructuring contemplated by the agreement in principle, iHeart and certain of its subsidiaries have filed voluntary petitions for relief under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code.  iHeart owns a full slate of stations in the Seattle area.  All Access Music Group
03/15/18 - Longtime environmental activist and host of CBC’s The Nature of Things David Suzuki and long time host of the CBC radio program Quirks and Quarks will be honored as the Walk of Fame’s first Hometown Star.  A plaque will be installed at the CBC plaza in downtown Vancouver with the unveiling ceremony to take place March 23 at 1:30 p.m. at 700 Hamilton Street.  V.I.A. 03/07/18 - Long time KSTW-TV Seattle Engineer and Auburn resident Ron Diotte passed away February 26 at age 62.  He began work at KSTW as the Engineering Crew Chief in 1983, becoming Chief Engineer in 1997.  In all he put in 35 years of service with the station.  Seattle Times obituary

03/03/18 - There are some changes and additions at JACK CJAX-FM 96.9 Vancouver as it adjusts to a more focused play list with new imaging and adds The Fitzy Show and The Trevor Shand Show over the next couple of weeks.  Fitzy Rob Fitzgerald comes from STAR FM CKSR-FM 98.3 Chilliwack Wednesday to Sunday beginning March 7th.  Trevor Shand, responsible for fun parody songs on JACK, will be producing a Saturday and Sunday morning show.  In addition, imaging is reintroducing “playing what we want”.

03/02/18 - KING 5 Seattle was one of the top NBC affiliates in the country with February deliveries from the 52nd Super Bowl and the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics, the first Games televised live across all U.S. time zones.  Super Bowl LII on KING 5 finished 4th among all metered markets in Households with a 79 share (only behind host city Minneapolis along with team cities Boston & Philadelphia).  The Olympics performance on KING 5 was strong as it finished among the top Local People Meter markets across all key dayparts, coming in 4th-5th in prime time starting at 5 p.m. and in 2nd place in all key demos for late-night prime plus. 
03/02/18 - (Updated) A public state memorial service for Dave Barrett, who led British Columbia's first New Democratic Party government, will be held in Victoria Saturday.  The service will be held at the Farquhar Auditorium at the University of Victoria at 10 a.m. and is open to the public.  Besides his many political achievements, Barrett hosted a morning talk show on CJOR Vancouver from 1984-87.  He died February 2 at age 87 after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease.  In addition, a celebration of life will be held Sunday at the Croatian Cultural Centre on Commercial Drive.  Tiffany Crawford, Vancouver Sun

02/17/18 - Kiah Tucker will take over the KiSS Radio CKKS-FM 104.9 drive show on Monday February 26th.  Kiah is well known to Vancouver radio listeners as host of Morning Glory with Kiah & Tara Jean on JACK CJAX-FM 96.9 from 2012-17.  As announced previously (11/28/17), afternoon host Ara Andonian returns to the Okanagan to assume mornings at Beach Radio CKQQ-FM 103.1 Kelowna.  His last show at KiSS is February 23rd.

02/14/18 - News/Talk KIRO-FM 97.3 Seattle has debuted KIRO Nights with Zak Burns & Gee Scott in the 7-10 p.m. time slot.  Burns had been hosting nights solo since Jason Rantz moved to mornings at sister Conservative Talk 770 KTTH AM Seattle last September.  He joined KIRO-FM in September 2016 to co-host the night show with Rantz.  Scott had been hosting nights at Bonneville’s 710 ESPN KIRO AM.  That timeslot has been turned over to ESPN Radio network programming.  All Access Music Group

02/08/18 - According to a posting on the Fagstein Blog, CHEK-TV Victoria has received approval from the CRTC for a share buyback plan that would technically result in the local Sampson family moving from a minority shareholder to having more than 50% control when the family’s shares are combined.  CHEK made it clear in its application that the Sampsons have no interest in having effective control of the company, which is run by the union, the employees and management, and a special shareholders’ agreement will limit their power.

02/07/18 - The CRTC has approved an application by CBC to change the antenna pattern and decrease daytime and nighttime transmitter power from 50,000 to 25,000 watts for CBU AM 690 Vancouver.  CBC stated that the changes are required due to damages sustained by a recent fire and that they should result in a similar coverage area, as most of the Radio One AM reception in the area is duplicated by the Radio One FM signal from CBU-2-FM 88.1 Vancouver.  CBC noted the proposed changes will ensure excellent coverage in Vancouver and the Sunshine Coast.  CRTC Release

01/28/18 - TV viewers north of the border will continue to be able to watch US ads during the Super Bowl without having to resort to antennas to get the games over the air from Seattle.  The Supreme Court of Canada has shot down an attempt by Bell Canada and the NFL to stall a regulatory decision on Super Bowl advertising before the championship game on February 4.  The companies asked for the stay in early January when they applied for leave to appeal the CRTC’s decision.  They argue the CRTC does not have the jurisdiction to ban simultaneous substitution (simsub) on cable and satellite for a single program.  This year's game will be carried on NBC and KING-TV Seattle, and on CTV and CTV Vancouver in Canada.  Emily Jackson, Vancouver Sun

01/23/18 - A KOMO Seattle news crew was uninjured when its vehicle was struck nearly head-on by a wrong way drunk driver in Eastern Washington Friday night.  A KOMO news photographer was driving their Subaru news vehicle on a bridge along state Route 26 in Othello when the mishap occurred.  The other driver, who fled the scene, was pulled over by an Adams County Sheriff's deputy, and was found to have a blood alcohol content level of .253 -- more than three times the legal limit.  The news crew was on its way back to Seattle after covering a story in Pullman.  KOMO News

01/22/18 (Updated) - Recent changes to Seattle area TV/radio stations include KFFV-TV dropping some channels and re-shuffling others.  KFFV has MeTV on 44.1, Movies on 44.2 and H&I on 44.3.  (Many sources, including FCC files show the PSIP channel to be 45.x, but KFFV actually displays as 44.x)  Other channels have been deleted.  KUSE-LD has added AAT TV on 46.4.  Other channels are unchanged but reports indicate frequent freeze-ups on 46.6 and 46.7. KRUM has stopped programming on 24.2 but the channel is alive.  KRUM is carrying religious programming on 24.1 with no sound and no ID.  KFNQ AM 1090 turned off its HD when new owners took over.  The only other Seattle market AM station with HD is KKDZ AM 1250, during daytime only.  Additionally, KARR AM 1460 remains off the air, which it has been for several months.

01/04/18 - Q13 KCPQ-TV Seattle meteorologist Rebecca Stevenson has announced her departure.  Prior to joining Q13 she was a key launch team member of Al Jazeera America in New York City, working as a meteorologist and correspondent for two years.  She has previously worked in Seattle as the Chief Meteorologist at KIRO-TV and meteorologist at KING-TV.  Puget Sound Media

01/03/18 - A memorial service has been announced for Northwest broadcast legend Jim French, who passed away peacefully at his home December 20 at age 89.  Over a career of more than 70 years, he touched many lives through his work as a radio personalty in Southern California, Hawaii and Seattle.  He was the writer, producer and director of Imagination Theatre which aired on KIXI Seattle for nearly 17 years.  The memorial will be held Saturday, January 13 at the South Bellevue Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 15205 SE 28th St., Bellevue.  Seattle Times Obituary
