08/31/18 - The syndicated Brooke & Jubal in the Morning has found its way onto the airwaves of Canada's capital city.  It debuts Monday, September 4 on JUMP! CKQB-FM 106.9 Ottawa.  The show, hosted by Brooke Fox and Jubal Flagg launched on MOViN KQMV-FM 92.5 Seattle in 2011 and moved into syndication in 2015.  Radio Ink

08/30/18 - Former CKNW AM 980 Vancouver staffer Pat MacPherson died from cancer August 28 at a hospice in Burnaby, just three days before her 90th birthday.  She held the position of Traffic Manager at CKNW for many years.

08/29/18 - A Celebration of Life has been announced for former CBC Vancouver staffer Garth Fowlie, who died May 23 at age 74.  It will take place Wednesday, October 3 from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m. in the Seymour Room of The Holiday Inn, 700 Old Lillooet Road, North Vancouver.  Anyone wishing to attend should contact Diane Fowlie at  There will be an opportunity to share memories.  Fowlie was a producer/director with CBC Vancouver from 1977 to the late 1980s.  NS News obituary

08/28/18 - The Inspector General has concluded the FCC didn’t show Sinclair Broadcast Group favoritism.  That's the finding by inspector general David Hunt, whose office has been reviewing how the FCC and agency chief Ajit Pai treated SBG and its now-aborted buyout of Tribune Media.  Had the merger completed, it would have impacted the Seattle stations owned by the two companies.  Inside Radio

08/16/18 - Following the previously announced move of John Ackermann to mornings at News 1130 CKWX AM Vancouver starting next month, Tim James will join Alison Bailey as co-anchor of the midday time slot.  Additionally, Peter Wagner moves into the weekend managing editor role starting next month.  He was previously providing news updates for Saga Communications stations in Bellingham before joining News 1130 last year.

08/14/18 - Jim Pattison Broadcast Group and Fabmar Investments Ltd. today jointly announced Pattison’s acquisition of Fabmar Communications Ltd. and it’s four radio stations -- CHWK-FM 89.5 Chilliwack and three others in Alberta and Saskatchewan.  The current local management teams will continue to lead the stations and all of the existing team members at the four Fabmar stations will be offered positions and the opportunity to grow with the Pattison Broadcast Group.  This grows Pattison’s radio footprint, as they will own and operate 44 FM and 3 AM stations in western Canada, along with 3 conventional television stations.  The sale is subject to CRTC approval.  Jim Pattison release   
08/14/18 - The CRTC has approved an application by Sher-E-Punjab Radio Broadcasting Inc. to change the authorized contours of the unlaunched ethnic commercial AM radio station to operate at 600 kHz in Vancouver by relocating the transmission site and increasing the daytime transmitter power from 10,000 to 50,000 watts and the nighttime transmitter power from 10,000 to 20,000 watts.  The requested technical changes are necessary because the land identified for the original transmission site had been sold, and the new owner was not interested in leasing the land to the applicant.  The station must be operational by no later than November 28, 2018.  CRTC release

08/13/18 - Toby Kerr joins News 1130 CKWX AM Vancouver as anchor/producer.  He comes from sister station 680 News CFTR AM Toronto where he was anchoring traffic and newscasts, as well as producing/editing.  Kerr will produce evening newscasts from Wednesday to Friday and will anchor evening newscasts on Saturday and Sunday.  He begins training Wednesday, September 5th.

08/13/18 - Veteran Vancouver broadcaster and former CTV Vancouver suppertime news anchor Mike Killeen will be filling in on talk shows at CKNW AM 980.  He made the announcement today on his Twitter page.  Killeen anchored the CTV News at Six with Tamara Taggart from 2011 until they were released in April.

08/11/18 - Former CBC Vancouver staffer Sheila Skelley died August 4 in Pembroke, ON at age 88.  During her CBC career, she worked as Production Assistant at CBC Public Affairs in Vancouver, Assistant BBC representative in Toronto, Program Organizer in Washington, Liaison Officer for foreign broadcasters at Expo 67 in Montreal and Overseas and Foreign Relations Officer in Ottawa and London, England.  Funeral services were held August 10 in Pembroke, ON.  Toronto Star Obituary

Sinclair Broadcast Group
08/10/19 - As previously reported, the $3.9 billion buyout of Tribune Media by Sinclair Broadcast Group collapsed Thursday, ending a bid to create a massive media juggernaut.  In Seattle, the merger would have involved two of the city's broadcast news outlets and impacted at least one of them.  KOMO-TV and Q13 Fox KCPQ-TV are owned by Sinclair and Tribune Media, respectively.  After the merger, it was expected that Q13 would be sold off, according to FTVLive. The Department of Justice had approved the merger with the condition that Sinclair shed about a dozen stations.  Alex Halverson, Seattle PI

08/09/18 - The Seattle Seahawks have named former Seahawks and Denver Broncos linebacker Dave Wyman to serve as radio analyst this season, filling the slot left vacant when Warren Moon took a leave of absence in December.  He will work alongside play-by-play voice Steve Raible during the regular season.  The games air on KIRO-FM 97.3 Seattle and a network across the Pacific Northwest.  Additionally, all four preseason games will be televised live on Q13 KCPQ-TVAll Access Music Group

Sinclair Broadcast Group
08/09/18 - Tribune Media Company has released a statement saying they’ve terminated the $3.9 billion agreement to merge with Sinclair Broadcast Group, Inc.  The company also added it would sue for a ‘breach of contract’.  Sinclair needed to divest stations in order to meet the national cap on audience reach for any single broadcast company.  Sinclair was proposing to control 233 stations in 108 markets, adding 42 Tribune stations to their current roster.  If approved, Sinclair would have been the largest U.S. broadcast company.  The companies each own two Seattle market TV stations.  Tribune Media release  Seattle PI

07/28/18 - As previously reported, KIRO-TV Seattle is one of 14 television stations that Cox Media is considering selling. The media conglomerate, a subset of Cox Enterprises, is exploring ownership options, including partnerships or mergers into a larger company. It owns a large portfolio of television and radio stations, as well as The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and other newspapers.  Bruce Pinkleton, dean of the Edward R. 07/23/18 - Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation has created a special fund in memory of John Ashbridge, who served on the Board of Directors for a full term, including a period as Vice Chair.  He was very generous with his time and talents and put his legendary voice behind many of the Foundation's projects, fully putting his heart into his work in support of Royal Columbian.  Donations to the fund will allow the Foundation to support the needs of the hospital, including its Code Blue Team.  This specialized group, composed of health care professionals, rush to the location of distressed patients at the hospital and start immediate resuscitative efforts.  Foundation Release

07/22/18 - After 53 years on the air at a multitude of Canadian radio stations, including an earlier stint in Vancouver, John Donabie has taken retirement.  He has most recently been hosting a show on campus and community station CIUT-FM 89.5 Toronto.  He was inducted into the Canadian Broadcast Industry Hall of Fame in 2013.  Donabie was hired in 1976 to help CKLG-FM 99.3 Vancouver transition from an "Underground" format to “Progressive Rock" and subsequently change calls to C-FOX three years later.  He returned to Toronto in 1977.  Toronto Mike'd Interview

07/21/18 - A Celebration of Life for veteran radio newsman and longtime Canucks PA announcer John Ashbridge was held Friday afternoon at the Vancouver Golf Club in Coquitlam.  An estimated 200 broadcasters, Canucks and Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation representatives, family and friends were in attendance.  Brian Antonson was the MC and speakers included John McKitrick, Al Murdoch, Jim Robson, and Belle Puri, all speaking about the many varied aspects of the life of a humble man who gave so much to his career, to friends and family, and to his community.  It was a true 'celebration' for the guy known to most people as Ash...nobody came to 'mourn'.  Singer Michael Bublé also attended to show his respect.

07/17/18 - KRKO AM 1380 Everett had an adult-contemporary music format in the early 1990s.  At that point the station switched to a talk format, which gradually transitioned to sports talk throughout the '90s.  By 2000 it was a full-time sports-talk station, affiliated nationally with the FOX Sports Radio Network.  When it lost its exclusive network rights earlier this year, management decided it was time to switch formats.  KRKO will maintain its broadcasting of Silvertips, AquaSox and high school games the same way it has in the past.  Nick Patterson, HeraldNet

07/05/18 - Former Vancouver news broadcaster JJ Richards has died according to a post on the C-FUN reunion group site.  The posting reads, "I will confirm that our wonderful JJ Richards passed away on Saturday June 30 about 2 p.m. at his home in Palm Springs.  An obituary will be placed in the Vancouver papers this weekend, and a celebration of life will be announced soon."  Richards had been News Director at CKDA/CFMS-FM Victoria from 1974-80; news reader and News Director at C-FUN Vancouver from 1980-98 and a talk show host there from 1998-2000, before retiring to Rancho Mirage CA, where he hosted and produced Palm Springs Street Talk for nine years.  He was 88 years old.

06/30/18 - Well known Vancouver cinematographer Robert Asgeirsson died June 12 at Peace Arch Hospital in White Rock following a nine-year battle with prostate cancer.  He was 74.  He developed his skills working at CJAY-TV Winnipeg during the 1960s, before moving to Vancouver in 1969 where he worked at BCTV as a documentary and current affairs film cameraman.  Asgeirsson then moved to CBC Vancouver for many years, shooting under contract for some seasons and for many different network and regional programs.  A celebration of life will be held Sunday, July 15th at 1:00 pm in the Scandinavian Community Centre, 6540 Thomas Street, Burnaby.  Sun/Province obituary

06/08/18 - Former CBC Vancouver staffer Garth Fowlie died May 23 at age 74 following a long struggle with Alzheimer's.  He began his television career at CFCN Television Calgary and later was a producer/director with CBC Vancouver from 1977 to the late 1980s.  A small family service was held on May 27 and plans for a 'Celebration of Life' are underway for early October in North Vancouver.  NS News obituary

06/08/18 - (UPDATE) Your webmaster Gord Lansdell is recuperating at home after a fairly serious operation to correct an intestinal obstruction.  At this point I am still unable to make regular daily updates, but intend to do so fairly shortly. I am overwhelmed by all the emails, texts, phone calls and other messages that have wished me well during this difficult time.  I thank everyone for your support.  Although I will have to return for another operation in September, I have been assured by doctors that I will eventually make a complete recovery.

04/12/18 - Long time Seattle broadcast engineer Clay Freinwald has returned home with his National Association of Broadcasters 2018 Service to Broadcast Engineering Award.  Freinwald was presented his award at the “We Are Broadcasters” Celebration at the NAB Show in Las Vegas.  He began his broadcast engineering career in 1961 while studying at Clover Park Technical College in Tacoma, where he earned an Associate's degree in Radio and Television Engineering and Production.  The NAB’s Engineering Achievement Awards have been presented since 1959 and recognize a person on the basis of a single significant contribution or contributions made over a period of time that, taken together, have significantly advanced the state of the art of broadcast engineering.

04/11/18 - The CRTC has rejected a complaint by Unifor against Rogers move to contract out its OMNI Regional Chinese language newscasts to competitor Fairchild TV.  Unifor locals 723M and 830M, which represent employees at OMNI in Vancouver and Toronto, along with The Chinese and Southeast Asian Legal Clinic, and Urban Alliance on Race Relations argued contracting out the newscasts violated Rogers condition of license.  The CRTC ruled Rogers condition of license to “produce the news” does not prevent it from subcontracting to a rival licensee.  Unifor release

03/02/18 - KING 5 Seattle was one of the top NBC affiliates in the country with February deliveries from the 52nd Super Bowl and the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics, the first Games televised live across all U.S. time zones.  Super Bowl LII on KING 5 finished 4th among all metered markets in Households with a 79 share (only behind host city Minneapolis along with team cities Boston & Philadelphia).  The Olympics performance on KING 5 was strong as it finished among the top Local People Meter markets across all key dayparts, coming in 4th-5th in prime time starting at 5 p.m. and in 2nd place in all key demos for late-night prime plus. 
03/02/18 - (Updated) A public state memorial service for Dave Barrett, who led British Columbia's first New Democratic Party government, will be held in Victoria Saturday.  The service will be held at the Farquhar Auditorium at the University of Victoria at 10 a.m. and is open to the public.  Besides his many political achievements, Barrett hosted a morning talk show on CJOR Vancouver from 1984-87.  He died February 2 at age 87 after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease.  In addition, a celebration of life will be held Sunday at the Croatian Cultural Centre on Commercial Drive.  Tiffany Crawford, Vancouver Sun

02/08/18 - According to a posting on the Fagstein Blog, CHEK-TV Victoria has received approval from the CRTC for a share buyback plan that would technically result in the local Sampson family moving from a minority shareholder to having more than 50% control when the family’s shares are combined.  CHEK made it clear in its application that the Sampsons have no interest in having effective control of the company, which is run by the union, the employees and management, and a special shareholders’ agreement will limit their power.

02/07/18 - The CRTC has approved an application by CBC to change the antenna pattern and decrease daytime and nighttime transmitter power from 50,000 to 25,000 watts for CBU AM 690 Vancouver.  CBC stated that the changes are required due to damages sustained by a recent fire and that they should result in a similar coverage area, as most of the Radio One AM reception in the area is duplicated by the Radio One FM signal from CBU-2-FM 88.1 Vancouver.  CBC noted the proposed changes will ensure excellent coverage in Vancouver and the Sunshine Coast.  CRTC Release

01/28/18 - TV viewers north of the border will continue to be able to watch US ads during the Super Bowl without having to resort to antennas to get the games over the air from Seattle.  The Supreme Court of Canada has shot down an attempt by Bell Canada and the NFL to stall a regulatory decision on Super Bowl advertising before the championship game on February 4.  The companies asked for the stay in early January when they applied for leave to appeal the CRTC’s decision.  They argue the CRTC does not have the jurisdiction to ban simultaneous substitution (simsub) on cable and satellite for a single program.  This year's game will be carried on NBC and KING-TV Seattle, and on CTV and CTV Vancouver in Canada.  Emily Jackson, Vancouver Sun

01/26/18 - According to a posting on Radio West, former Vancouver broadcaster George Kelso died Thursday (01/25) on Vancouver Island.  He had been on air at UBC Radio in the late 1950s and at CFJC Kamloops and CHQM and CKLG Vancouver in the early 1960s before embarking on a long career, including management at CFRN Edmonton from 1964-92.  He retired to Vancouver Island and according to his Oceanside Media Club bio, was living in Courtenay.  Radio West Posting

01/23/18 - A KOMO Seattle news crew was uninjured when its vehicle was struck nearly head-on by a wrong way drunk driver in Eastern Washington Friday night.  A KOMO news photographer was driving their Subaru news vehicle on a bridge along state Route 26 in Othello when the mishap occurred.  The other driver, who fled the scene, was pulled over by an Adams County Sheriff's deputy, and was found to have a blood alcohol content level of .253 -- more than three times the legal limit.  The news crew was on its way back to Seattle after covering a story in Pullman.  KOMO News

01/22/18 (Updated) - Recent changes to Seattle area TV/radio stations include KFFV-TV dropping some channels and re-shuffling others.  KFFV has MeTV on 44.1, Movies on 44.2 and H&I on 44.3.  (Many sources, including FCC files show the PSIP channel to be 45.x, but KFFV actually displays as 44.x)  Other channels have been deleted.  KUSE-LD has added AAT TV on 46.4.  Other channels are unchanged but reports indicate frequent freeze-ups on 46.6 and 46.7. KRUM has stopped programming on 24.2 but the channel is alive.  KRUM is carrying religious programming on 24.1 with no sound and no ID.  KFNQ AM 1090 turned off its HD when new owners took over.  The only other Seattle market AM station with HD is KKDZ AM 1250, during daytime only.  Additionally, KARR AM 1460 remains off the air, which it has been for several months.

01/16/18 - Former KIRO-FM/AM Seattle Operations Manager Claude Rorabough is back in the radio business as the voice of Tom Read's American Christian Radio Network stations based in Spokane.  His last radio position was as VP and General Manager of KMUZ AM/FM Portland (the FM is now KNRK 94.7) in the late 1990s.  Early in his career, he was the morning host and Operations Manager of KEZX-FM 98.9 (now KVRQ-FM) Seattle in the mid 1970s.  During college he was doing weekends on both KIRO and KIRO-FM/KSEA-FM and during high school he was at KURB AM 1510 Mountlake Terrace.
